CORE API alternative: fast, keyed paper search with predictable limits
Published September 26, 2026
CORE aggregates open-access research outputs from repositories and journals around the world and exposes them through a free API. It is a great resource for open-access discovery. This post looks at how it compares with OpenAbstracts for application developers. Details are as of September 2026 from CORE's public documentation; check the latest before deciding.
The short version
- Choose CORE when your goal is open-access discovery across repositories worldwide and you can live within its rate limits.
- Choose OpenAbstracts when you need throughput you control per key, a curated index of registered journals with quartile filtering, full-text search with highlighted snippets, and MCP integration for AI assistants.
What CORE publishes
CORE's API access is free and does not require authentication, with better performance for registered users. It uses token-based rate limiting: according to its documentation the standard limit is one batch request or five single requests per ten seconds, and organisations that register get a faster rate. Check CORE's documentation for the current registered-user quotas.
That limit is fine for occasional lookups and research scripts. For a user-facing feature that fans out several searches per page view, or for batch verification of a bibliography, a limit measured in requests per ten seconds becomes the bottleneck.
Side by side
| CORE | OpenAbstracts | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free (registration improves limits) | 100 free searches/month, then $1.50 per 1,000 |
| Rate limits | Token-based; standard tier one batch or five single requests per 10 s | No per-second throttle applied by default; optional per-key request limit and expiry |
| Index | Open-access outputs aggregated from repositories and journals | Papers from 100,000+ journals |
| Quality filters | — | quartile, category, yearFrom/yearTo |
| Snippets | See CORE docs | Highlighted passages from PDF full text (mode=content) |
| AI assistants | REST API | Remote MCP server, OAuth Connect, citation Skill |
When each makes sense
Use CORE for open-access coverage and research scripts where a throttle doesn't matter. Use OpenAbstracts when you are shipping a feature that needs consistent latency and quotas, or when you want journal-quality filtering. Because both return DOIs, they can be combined: search OpenAbstracts for quality-filtered results and use CORE to look for an open-access copy of a specific DOI.
Example
curl "https://openabstracts.com/api/references-search?q=climate+adaptation+agriculture&quartile=Q1,Q2&yearFrom=2019&limit=10" \
-H "x-api-key: isk_live_YOUR_KEY"
