scite.ai alternative for developers who need a self-serve search API
Published September 26, 2026
scite is known for "Smart Citations": it shows how later papers cite a work, for example as supporting or contrasting evidence. That is a different product from a general paper search API. This post explains the difference for developers deciding between them. Details are as of September 2026 from scite's public pricing page; plans change, so check it.
The short version
- Choose scite when citation context matters — whether a paper has been supported or contradicted by later work — or when you want its research assistant and dashboards.
- Choose OpenAbstracts when you want a plain, self-serve search API you can start using in minutes, billed per request, with full-text search and MCP integration for AI assistants.
What scite publishes
scite's pricing page lists a free Connect plan (including 25 MCP credits per month, grounded in 300M+ papers), a Basic plan at $14 per month billed yearly, and a Pro plan at $35 per month billed yearly. API access is listed on the Pro plan (with included API credit), and the page notes further API and data-access products are available by contacting sales.

Who should use which
If your product depends on classifying citations (supporting, contrasting, mentioning), scite's data is the point and OpenAbstracts doesn't replace it.
If your product needs to find relevant papers, show why they matched, and link to sources — for a chatbot, a writing tool or a research feature — a metered search API is simpler and cheaper to start with, and you only pay for what you use. Both can coexist: retrieve with OpenAbstracts, then enrich with scite for the papers that matter.
